Amazon Is Coming for Your Patients. Are You Invisible?

What Amazon's Health AI launch means for health system patient volume -- and why the real threat is not Amazon.
Amazon just made the AI health race real for every hospital CMO in America.
On March 10, 2026, Amazon opened Health AI to every U.S. customer on Amazon.com and the Amazon app. It books appointments, reads lab results, manages prescriptions, and connects patients to doctors. No Prime subscription required. No One Medical membership required.
This is not a chatbot. This is a vertically integrated health system backed by 170 million Prime members, a national pharmacy, and now your patients' medical records.
On this week's AI Espresso, Bobby and I break down what this actually means for health system marketing leaders. Here are the three things you need to understand.
Amazon's Advantage Is Not the AI
Every company has AI. Amazon has the rails.
Prime membership is already a daily habit. Amazon Pharmacy is already trusted. One Medical -- which Amazon acquired for $3.9 billion in 2023 -- gives them physical and virtual care to close the loop. The AI just connects what they already built over the last decade.
ChatGPT Health and Claude for Healthcare are AI interfaces. Amazon is building a vertically integrated health system. That is a different category of competition.
The lesson every health system CMO should take from this: distribution beats technology every time. Amazon did not win e-commerce because they built the best shopping cart. They won because they built the infrastructure no one else could replicate.
Your Patients Are Being Intercepted Before They Call You
This is the core problem, and most health system marketing teams do not see it yet.
A patient notices chest pain symptoms. They search Google. AI Overviews answer them before they click a single link. They open Amazon Health AI or ChatGPT Health for next steps. They get an answer, they get routed, they book a visit. By the time they might have considered calling your cardiology line, they are already somewhere else.
Your health system never knew that patient was looking. Your website never had a chance to show up. Your analytics report zero lost traffic because the patient never arrived.
That is the Trust Tax in action. When your digital presence is inconsistent -- mismatched schema, thin content, weak AI citation signals -- AI models quietly downgrade your visibility. You pay that tax every time a patient asks an AI a question and your name does not come up.
The volume loss is real. It just does not show up on any dashboard you are currently running.
Amazon Is Not Your Competitor. Invisibility Is.
Here is the reframe that changes how you should think about this.
Amazon winning does not mean your health system loses. But a health system that is invisible in AI search loses to everyone -- Amazon, ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, all of it. The threat is not any single platform. The threat is not showing up when the patient is asking the question.
You cannot out-Amazon Amazon. You cannot outspend OpenAI. But you can own the moment before the patient ever opens any of those apps. That window is the AI search moment, and it is closing fast for health systems that are not preparing for it.
Three Things CMOs Should Do This Quarter
We give your listeners something concrete on every episode. Here is what we covered:
• Run an AI-Readiness Scan on your top service lines. Query ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity for your highest-volume conditions. See where you show up -- or do not. You need to know the answer before your board asks.
• Audit your content for AI citation quality, not just SEO ranking. Page one rankings do not protect you anymore. AI models pull from structured data, schema markup, and authoritative content signals. If your content is not built for citation, it is invisible in the AI layer.
• Stop treating AI search as an IT problem. This belongs in marketing. The CMO who owns AI search strategy owns patient volume in 2027. The one who waits for IT to bring a solution will be three years behind.
Amazon spent $3.9 billion on One Medical. Years building Pharmacy. Now they layered AI on top and opened it to every U.S. customer. The CMOs who move now will be the ones who still have patient volume in three years.
